Summary
The story takes place on a train where a young and elegant woman named Miss Fairchild meets an old friend, Mr. Easton. She notices that he is handcuffed to a rough-looking man sitting beside him. Easton feels embarrassed and uncomfortable. The rough-looking man politely explains that he is taking Easton to prison because Easton has been sentenced for counterfeiting. Miss Fairchild feels surprised but continues talking with Easton. Later, after the two men leave for the smoking car, other passengers reveal the truth: the rough-looking man was actually the marshal, and Easton was the prisoner. The marshal had switched the handcuff to save Easton from public embarrassment.
