About the Author
Gabriel García Márquez (1927–2014) was a Colombian writer and journalist, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. He is the most famous practitioner of magical realism — a literary style in which magical or supernatural elements are presented as ordinary parts of everyday life. This story was published in 1968.
Summary
During a period of heavy rain, Pelayo and Elisenda discover a very old man with enormous wings lying in their courtyard. He appears to be an angel, but he is dirty, weak, and cannot communicate properly. The villagers are curious but also cruel and treat him as an object of entertainment. Father Gonzaga, the priest, doubts his divinity because he does not match religious expectations of an angel. People come to see him and expect miracles, but they are unclear and unimpressive. Elisenda begins charging money for visitors and becomes wealthy. Later, a traveling attraction featuring a spider-woman becomes more popular, and the crowd forgets the old man. Eventually, he recovers and flies away.
Themes
The failure of wonder. The story shows how people lose their ability to recognize or respect something truly extraordinary. Instead of awe, they respond with curiosity, greed, and disrespect.
Institutional religion and doubt. Father Gonzaga represents the Church’s rigid standards. He rejects the possibility of the angel because it does not fit established religious rules.
Exploitation and greed. Pelayo and Elisenda use the old man for profit, showing how quickly human beings turn even miracles into business opportunities.
Magical realism and human behavior. The supernatural element is not questioned; instead, the focus is on how humans react to it. The story becomes a reflection of human selfishness and ignorance.
Narrative Style: Magical Realism
The story treats magical elements as normal facts. The angel’s wings are described without surprise or explanation. The narrator maintains a calm, almost journalistic tone. This blending of the magical and ordinary is the key feature of magical realism.
