Summary
The narrator has spent his whole life walking on a dusty road with many other people. Everyone keeps moving forward and measuring how far they have traveled. The narrator feels tired and exhausted from this endless journey. One day he decides to pass through a hedge beside the road. On the other side he finds a peaceful and beautiful meadow where life is calm and unhurried. People there are relaxed and do not compete with each other. He meets familiar people, including his brother, who crossed through the hedge years earlier. He is given water to drink, which makes him forget the distance he had traveled. In the end, he lies down and peacefully falls asleep.
Themes
Progress and Its Cost
