About the Author
Joseph Conrad (1857–1924) was a Polish-born British novelist who wrote in English. His writings often focus on the sea, moral conflict, loneliness, and the hidden sides of human nature. The Secret Sharer was published in 1909.
Summary
The story follows a young and inexperienced sea captain on his first command. One night, while standing alone on the ship, he discovers a naked man named Leggatt holding onto the side of the ship. Leggatt has escaped from another ship after killing a sailor during a violent storm while trying to save the crew. The captain secretly hides Leggatt in his cabin, gives him clothes, food, and protection. As time passes, the captain feels a strong connection with him, almost as if Leggatt is another version of himself. In the end, the captain risks bringing his ship dangerously close to shore so Leggatt can swim to safety and escape.
Themes
The Double or Doppelganger
Leggatt acts like the captain’s second self. The captain sees parts of himself in Leggatt. Their close connection suggests that Leggatt represents the hidden side of the captain’s personality.
Moral Complexity and Judgment
Leggatt killed a man, but it happened during a dangerous storm while protecting the ship. Conrad does not clearly say whether he was right or wrong. This leaves the reader to think about justice and difficult choices.
Leadership and Self-Knowledge
The captain learns about himself through his relationship with Leggatt. By facing someone so similar to himself, he gains confidence and becomes stronger as a leader.
Isolation and Solidarity
At the beginning, the captain feels lonely and unsure because he is new to command. His secret friendship with Leggatt gives him confidence and a sense of purpose.
Narrative Style
Conrad uses first-person narration, so the captain tells the story himself. The writing is thoughtful and psychological. The darkness of the sea, the silent cabin, and the secret hiding place all build suspense and reflect the captain’s inner struggle.
Key Literary Device: Symbolism
The sea is a powerful symbol in the story. It represents mystery, danger, and the hidden depths of the human mind. Leggatt also symbolizes the captain’s inner self.
