About the Author
Thomas Hardy was an English novelist and poet best known for his tragic stories set in rural England, especially in the fictional region of Wessex. His works often focus on the conflict between personal desires and strict social rules. The Three Strangers was published in 1883.
Summary
On a stormy night in rural Dorset, a shepherd named Fennel is holding a christening party at his cottage.
During the celebration, three strangers arrive one after another.
The first stranger joins the party and is later revealed to be a hangman traveling to execute a prisoner the next morning.
The second stranger arrives soon after, joins the guests, drinks, and sings. He is actually the condemned prisoner who has escaped.
A third stranger suddenly enters but quickly runs away in fear.
The villagers think the third man is the escaped criminal. They chase and capture him.
Later, the truth is discovered: the third stranger was the prisoner’s brother. He ran because he recognized the hangman.
Meanwhile, the real escaped prisoner — the second stranger — quietly leaves while no one suspects him.
Themes
1. Appearance vs Reality
This is the main theme of the story.
Hardy shows that people often judge wrongly based on appearances.
2. Justice and Sympathy
The prisoner was sentenced to death for stealing a sheep.
Hardy presents this punishment as harsh and unfair and creates sympathy for the poor man.
3. Community and Social Gathering
The christening party shows warmth, friendship, and village life.
This peaceful atmosphere contrasts with the harshness of official justice represented by the hangman.
4. Fate and Coincidence
The hangman and prisoner arriving at the same cottage on the same night is an unlikely coincidence.
Hardy uses this to show how fate can work in strange and ironic ways.
Narrative Style and Structure
The stormy night and isolated cottage are classic examples of Hardy’s descriptive writing.
Key Literary Device: Dramatic Irony
