Historical Background
China sees itself as a great civilization that was humiliated by Western and Japanese imperialism from 1839 to 1949. The Communist Party came to power in 1949 with the promise of restoring China's greatness and sovereignty.
Core Principles of Chinese Foreign Policy
Sovereignty and non-interference: China is extremely sensitive about its sovereignty and strongly opposes any foreign interference in its internal affairs (Taiwan, Tibet, Xinjiang).
Peaceful rise: China officially promotes the idea that its rise will be peaceful and beneficial for all — though many countries are skeptical.
Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence: Mutual respect for sovereignty, mutual non-aggression, non-interference, equality, and peaceful coexistence. China has promoted these principles since the 1950s.
South-South solidarity: China presents itself as a leader of developing countries against Western dominance.
Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)
China's most ambitious foreign policy project — a massive infrastructure investment program connecting Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America through roads, railways, ports, and pipelines. Critics argue BRI creates debt traps for developing countries. China argues it is genuine development assistance.
Current Chinese Foreign Policy Priorities
• Reunification with Taiwan (by force if necessary)
• Asserting control over the South China Sea
• Reducing dependence on Western technology
• Building an alternative international order less dominated by the United States
