Goals of Foreign Policy — Free written notes for International Relation - IR on EduFlame Pakistan.
Every country's foreign policy is driven by certain basic goals:
1. National Security
The most fundamental goal of any state is to protect itself from external threats — invasion, terrorism, or destabilization. Security concerns shape almost every major foreign policy decision.
2. Economic Prosperity
States pursue foreign policies that promote trade, attract investment, secure access to resources like oil and gas, and protect their economic interests abroad.
3. Political Influence
States want to have influence in international affairs — to shape international rules, lead international organizations, and have their voice heard in global decisions.
4. Preservation of Values and Ideology
Some countries promote their values and ideology internationally. The United States promotes democracy and human rights. Iran promotes its Islamic revolutionary ideology. China promotes its model of development without political liberalization.
5. Prestige and Status
Countries want to be respected and recognized as important players in international affairs. Prestige matters — it affects how other countries treat you and whether they listen to your demands.
