What is Foreign Policy?

Foreign policy is the set of goals, strategies, and actions that a country uses to guide its relationships with other countries and international organizations. Every country has a foreign policy — even small and weak countries must decide how to deal with the outside world.

Simply put, foreign policy answers the question: How should our country behave toward other countries, and why?

Foreign policy is where International Relations theory meets real-world practice. It is the practical expression of a country's national interest.
