Why Do We Study Morphology?

Morphology is studied because it helps us understand how words are formed, how they change, and how they convey meaning. The study of morphology reveals that speakers do not simply memorize words as fixed units. For example, when someone says “She is Googling something,” they have transformed the proper noun Google into a verb and then added the grammatical ending required for the present progressive tense. For students of English language and literature, morphology is particularly valuable because it develops the ability to analyze unfamiliar words. By breaking complex words into smaller meaningful units, students can often determine meaning without consulting a dictionary.
