The Basic Unit: The Morpheme

Before studying morphology in greater detail, it is essential to understand the concept of the morpheme, which is the fundamental unit of morphological analysis. A morpheme is the smallest meaningful unit in a language. Unlike words, which may consist of one or more meaningful parts, a morpheme cannot be divided further without losing its meaning or grammatical function.

It is important to distinguish a morpheme from a syllable. A syllable is a unit of pronunciation or sound, whereas a morpheme is a unit of meaning. The two do not always correspond. For example, the word carpet contains two syllables, car and pet, but these parts do not contribute separate meanings to the word. Therefore, carpet is considered a single morpheme despite having more than one syllable.

In contrast, the word cats contains only one syllable but consists of two morphemes: cat and -s. The morpheme cat carries the basic lexical meaning, while -s indicates plurality. Since each part contributes a distinct meaning, the word contains two morphemes.

This distinction demonstrates a key principle of morphology: morphology focuses on meaning and word structure rather than sound alone. By identifying morphemes within words, linguists can better understand how words are formed and how grammatical and lexical meanings are expressed in a language.
