To understand the relationship between an individual and the state, it is essential to first define three fundamental concepts:

A. Civics Civics is the academic study of the rights, duties, and responsibilities of citizens. It focuses on how a society operates, how the government functions, and how ordinary people interact with the law. In simple terms, if society is a complex system, civics is the theoretical manual that explains the rules of living together in that system.

B. Citizenship Citizenship is the legal and political status of an individual within a state (such as Pakistan). It is a two-way relationship based on a "social contract."

C. Civic Engagement While citizenship is a legal status, civic engagement is the practical application of that status. It refers to the active participation of individuals in public life to address issues of public concern. Whenever a citizen steps forward to improve their community—whether by organizing an awareness campaign, volunteering for a local cause, or helping neighbors in need—they are practicing civic engagement.
