Concept, Nature, and Characteristics of Community — Free written notes for Civic and Community Engagement on EduFlame Pakistan.
To engage effectively with a society, one must first understand what constitutes a "community."
A. Concept and Nature A community is not simply a group of people living near each other; it is a social unit that shares something in common. Communities generally fall into two categories:
Geographic Communities: People who share a physical space, such as a specific neighborhood, village, or a city like Bannu.
Communities of Interest: People who share common goals, professions, or identities, regardless of where they live. For example, a community of university students studying English literature, or an online community of web developers.
B. Characteristics of a Community A strong, functional community shares several defining traits:
Shared Identity: A sense of belonging and a shared cultural or social background.
Interdependence: Members rely on each other to fulfill daily needs, share resources, and solve local problems.
Common Values and Norms: Shared rules of behavior that guide how people interact and respect one another.
