Essay Organization and Structure — Free written notes for Expository Writing on EduFlame Pakistan.

A well-written expository essay has three main parts: the Introduction, the Body, and the Conclusion. Each part serves a specific purpose, and together they create a logical, unified piece of writing.


The Introduction

The introduction is the first paragraph (or sometimes two paragraphs) of the essay. Its purpose is to:


1. The Hook

The hook is the first sentence or two that grabs attention.

Types of hooks:


2. Background Information

Gives context about the topic and connects the hook to the thesis.


3. Thesis Statement

The main idea of the essay (1–2 sentences).

Weak: Global warming is a problem.
Strong: Global warming, caused by emissions and deforestation, threatens ecosystems and human life.


Body Paragraphs

Usually 3–5 paragraphs. Each paragraph focuses on one idea.

2. Supporting Evidence
Includes:

3. Transitional Devices


4. Concluding Sentence


The Conclusion

Final paragraph of the essay.
