Proofreading — Free written notes for Expository Writing on EduFlame Pakistan.
Proofreading is the final check of the essay before submission. It is the most detailed stage, focusing on finding and correcting surface-level errors that were missed during editing.
What to Check During Proofreading:
-
Spelling mistakes: Especially homophones such as their/there/they’re, its/it’s, and affect/effect.
-
Grammatical errors: Check subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and pronoun agreement.
-
Punctuation errors: Look for missing commas, incorrect apostrophes, and other punctuation mistakes.
-
Formatting: Are headings, spacing, and margins correct?
-
Citation format: Are all references cited correctly?
-
Consistency: Are names, numbers, and terminology used consistently throughout the essay?
Tips for Effective Proofreading:
-
Read the essay aloud — your ear can catch errors that your eye may miss.
-
Read backwards (from the last sentence to the first) — this helps you focus on each sentence individually rather than the overall meaning.
-
Print the essay and mark errors with a pen.
-
Use spell-check tools, but do not rely on them completely because they may miss context-based errors.
-
Proofread at a different time of day or ask someone else to read the essay.
Difference Between Editing and Proofreading:
-
Editing improves clarity, style, and sentence structure.
-
Proofreading corrects spelling, grammar, punctuation, and formatting errors.
Important: Editing comes before proofreading. You should only proofread once you are satisfied with the content and style of your writing.
