Biotechnology & Application of Biotechnology — Free written notes for Natural Science on EduFlame Pakistan.
Biotechnology is the application of biological systems, living organisms, or their components to develop or create new products, processes, and technologies. The word comes from "bio" (life) and "technology" (the application of knowledge for practical purposes). Biotechnology combines biology, chemistry, genetics, and engineering.
Applications of Biotechnology
Medicine and Healthcare:
Production of insulin through genetically engineered bacteria (used to treat diabetes).
Development of vaccines, including recombinant vaccines and mRNA vaccines (e.g., COVID-19 vaccines).
Gene therapy: correcting or replacing defective genes to treat genetic diseases.
Monoclonal antibodies: used in targeted cancer therapy and autoimmune disease treatment.
Stem cell therapy: using stem cells to repair or replace damaged tissues.
Agriculture:
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs): crops engineered to be pest-resistant (Bt cotton), drought-tolerant, or nutritionally enhanced (Golden Rice, enriched with Vitamin A).
Development of disease-resistant crops.
Tissue culture: growing large numbers of identical plants from small pieces of plant tissue in a laboratory.
Biofertilizers and biopesticides as eco-friendly alternatives to chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
Food Industry:
Fermentation: using microorganisms to produce yogurt, cheese, bread, beer, and wine.
Enzyme production for food processing.
Environment:
Bioremediation: using bacteria or other organisms to clean up environmental pollution (e.g., oil spills).
Biogas production: using microorganisms to break down organic waste and produce methane gas for energy.
Industrial Applications:
Producing biodegradable plastics, biofuels (ethanol from corn), and industrial enzymes (used in detergents, paper manufacturing, and textiles).
